A deadly cholera epidemic is sweeping across Yemen. In just the last 3 months, 800,000 cases have been recorded. Without healthcare and proper sanitation, this killer is spreading rapidly.
The epidemic has become the biggest and fastest-spreading in modern times. It is expected that there will be ONE MILLION people affected by the end of December.
Cholera can kill in just a few hours. 2,000 people have already died, a quarter of them children. They are already weakened by starvation and are at terrible risk from this deadly but preventable disease. Cholera can be successfully treated with oral rehydration salts, a simple sachet which costs just cents can help save a child suffering from cholera.
Human Appeal is working in partnership with the local healthcare workers to cope with this outbreak. We have carried out a rapid needs assessment in Sana’a and Al Hudaydah. In coordination with the UN Health Cluster, we delivered 100 beds with medical mattresses to cholera centers in Sana’a. We also supported hospitals with medical supplies such as oral rehydration solutions, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, masks, protection gowns and head covers, allowing them to treat 24,800 people.
