Syria Crisis Appeal January 2018
In the past weeks, fighting in Syria has escalated and the conditions of the civilian population in the affected area has deteriorated. Millions of innocent civilian lives are in imminent danger from airstrikes in Idlib in the north of the country and the in the besieged area of Ghouta the people there suffer from famine, a drastic lack of medical care as well as bombing which has killed 126 people with 29 children and 28 women tragically losing their lives.
In Ghouta people are trapped and cannot seek safety from bombs and shells that rain down upon them. They are cut off from basic food and essential medical supplies which means that malnutrition is widespread. Women and babies are especially vulnerable – starvation is costing lives needlessly.
In just the last month more than 70,000 have fled their homes and become displaced. There is acute overcrowding throughout Idlib which just cannot cope with the number of civilians now homeless.
Life has become a living hell for innocent families
Now without food, shelter and fresh water, these families are in the gravest of danger: they live in makeshift shelters that expose them to the elements in unsanitary conditions. This means that the children, the elderly and the ill are threatened by hunger and disease and cannot get the medical care they need to keep them alive.
Added to this, the rain, snow and freezing conditions of the Syrian winter are having catastrophic health effects. Clothing and heating fuel is in short supply and will run out soon.
