Safe water - save lives
With your help this essential project can be achieved and the lives of 600,000 people and the sustainability of the Gaza environment secured into the future.
There is a water crisis threatening the health of the people of Gaza: and it’s getting worse. With your help, Human Appeal will solve this problem and provide clean drinking water to 600,000 people.
Most people in Gaza can’t afford to buy drinking water from private desalination schemes. This means they have to use water that is dirty and unsafe.
The main source of water in the area is the Coastal Aquifer: a natural underground reservoir: but this is unable to meet the needs of the population: 150 cubic meters are needed each year to sustain the population, but the aquifer is only replenished at a rate of 55 cubic meters per year. So it’s running dry. Worse, it’s showing all the signs of contamination.
Salty sea-water is filtering into the aquifer. Wastewater is also leaking in. There is also contamination from agricultural fertilizers pollution. Almost all of the water available for people to drink just doesn’t meet the standard international guidelines for domestic use.
Unless we do something now, the problem is only going to get worse as Gaza’s population increases.
The best way to solve these critical problems is to build a centralised desalination plant. Clean water will help reduce the incidence of water-borne illness and liver diseases caused by drinking water with too high a salt content.
A desalination project will also create jobs in construction of the plant and in the distribution of the water. It will also help to reduce the draw on the aquifer and so will aid in its restoration through natural processes.
