Entire families wiped out in Libya

The Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) said, ‘The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.’ (Hadith Al-Tirmidhi)

Over 10,000 people are missing after Storm Daniel tore through Libya on 11 September, triggering deadly flooding. In Derna, two dams burst, sending powerful, terrifying floods coursing through the city, wiping out entire families. At least 11,300 people have been confirmed dead, with that figure expected to rise to 20,000. More than 43,000 people have been displaced and urgently need help to survive this catastrophe.

£100 - Emergency survival pack: Provide a Libyan family with food, water, medical aid, blankets, and shelter items.

Many of Libya’s eastern towns have been affected but in Bayda and Derna the devastation is cataclysmic. In the port city of Derna, home to 100,000 people, 25% of the city has been destroyed, at least 2,2,17 buildings collapsed, 2,176 damaged, and 30,000 people have been displaced.

Survivors, desperate to hear news of their missing loved ones, are traumatised and urgently need life-saving items including food and shelter.

Continuing crisis

As families struggle to grasp the tragedy they’ve survived, they also are facing secondary crises. 95% of survivors in Derna can’t access clean water, with the water supply contaminated by all debris washed away in the flood, including, animals and people. 150 people have fallen sick due to drinking contaminated water – including at least 55 children in Derna.

Today 99% of families in Derna face struggles in accessing daily food because of increased prices.

Almost half of clinics and hospitals in and around Derna are facing challenges including shortages of medicines and staff. More than 2,500 women are heavily pregnant and due to give birth soon.
